The NGO Educo warns that there are more than half a million children in Spain who are left alone in the afternoon at home.
Nobody picks them up when they leave school. Nor is there anyone who waits at home to give them the snack. They are the so-called children of the key, the minors who are left alone at home in the evenings because their parents work. They put the key around their necks because they are the ones who have to open the door of their house. According to the NGO Educo, in Spain there are 580,000 children between the ages of six and 13 who are left alone in the summer evenings, the most vulnerable time, according to experts. It is 66% more than in 2009. And it will continue to grow, warns Educo's Director of Education and Social Action, Clarisa Giamello.
The transition from primary to secondary (11-12 years) is the turning point, when parents claim they are "older" and give them the keys to home, says the report Natives of the crisis: children of the key, elaborate By Educo. However, a survey by the same humanitarian organization warns that the age bracket of children in the key is much wider: it is estimated that last summer in Spain there were more than half a million children in the key between six and 13 years.

A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a not-for-profit organization that is independent from states and international governmental organizations. They are usually funded by donations but some avoid formal funding altogether and are run primarily by volunteers. NGOs are highly diverse groups of organizations engaged in a wide range of activities, and take different forms in different parts of the world.
